A Season of Creativity: Under The Aegis Closes with Reflections on the Don Julio Artist Residency

Our foundeAnelisa Mangcu recently had the pleasure of being in conversation with the artists who took part in the Don Julio Artist Residency in Mexico. Their findings and insight were experienced at the stunning Inimitable in Muldersdrift. The residency was a celebration of craftsmanship, creativity, and heritage. It reminded us of the importance of creating spaces for artists to connect deeply with their work, their communities, and their cultural roots. Collaborating with accomplished art practitioners like Lukhanyo Mdingi whose designs radiate timeless elegance, Crystal Birch who redefines storytelling through her innovative hat designs, and Imraan Christian whose visual narratives continue to evolve with extraordinary depth, was a privilege. Witnessing these artists expand their practice and push creative boundaries reaffirmed how art can transcend borders and tell a universal story of passion and dedication.

Don Julio’s vision for this residency was rooted in showcasing how South African artistry could beautifully intertwine with the rich heritage of Mexico. With soulful music inspired by his experience in Mexico, the Artist in Residence and Soweto’s finest Kelvin Momo and Thebe Magugu and thoughtfully curated installations that brought to life the spirit of Por Amor, the evening became a testament to the transformative power of creativity.

This residency in Mexico was significant as it offered us the privilege to bear witness to these four accomplished art practitioners who created art that deeply aligns with the brands ethos. It was a powerful reminder that when we create with love — for our craft, our heritage, and one another — we produce something truly timeless and transformative.

Thank you to Don Julio for this unforgettable evening and to everyone who joined in celebrating the extraordinary bond between passion and purpose. Let us continue to nurture and honor the creativity, culture, and stories that shape who we are.
